Pantomime 2012 Once upon a time, a boy from Gloucestershire journeyed to London to seek fame and fortune… the Lane End Players told this story in January 2012! Dick Whittington was a seasonal treat for the whole family, full of fun and song and laughter. Audiences came to join in Dick’s adventures as he and his faithful moggy Tommy fought against the evil plans of Ratania, Queen of all the Rats. Along the way they met Dick’s friends Idle Jack and Alderman Fitzwarren, the outrageous cook Sarah Suet and calamitous duo Captain Cod and Skate the Mate. They journeyed with the crew all the way to the shores of Morocco, where a particularly picky Sultan awaited with most unusual dinner plans… But never fear, the magical Fairy Bow-Bells was there to make sure our heroes got back to Old London Town, which was desperately in need of a new Lord Mayor!
by Rita Carpenter Front of House & Programme As always we received a warm welcome and shown to our seats which were well placed, except that they were in line with the door and during the interval when the door was kept open it was very cold and our feet froze but this may have been because it was a very cold day. Some of the chorus were used front of house showing people to their seats, selling raffle tickets and refreshments in their costumes which was a nice touch preparing the audience for the performance. The programme was well set out on glossy paper with a puzzle for the children which was an innovative idea. The NODA logo was on the front but so small it was almost impossible to read the details. With Sarah Westcott as musical director on keyboard and Raymond Medhurst on percussion we were treated to an overture comprising many well know tunes splendidly performed leaving the audience eagerly anticipating the show. Staging & Set The Players really make the most of the not very large stage and the fact that it is a village hall. The backdrops were superb. Set design was by Simon Emery. The painting was done by a large team too numerous to mention but their work was excellent and they are to be complimented, especially [for] the scene on Highgate Hill. The perspective was brilliant. Lighting, Sound & Effects Designed by Tom Sims, aided by a large lighting team, the effects, especially the storm on board the ship, were truly terrific, both lighting and [the] sound by John Trett, assisted by Peter Sims. I have added effects because the use of a smoke machine for the appearance of the rats was a masterful touch, used just enough, but never overdone. My compliments to whoever was responsible. The use of the echoing voices for calling Dick back to London was cleverly achieved. The Stage Manager was Paul Brown; Lannie Staff, Martin Hailey and Jonny Brown were on props. Costumes Eve Berry, Tish Marshall, Sophie Marshall, Hilary Martin, Libby Beck and members of the cast were listed as those in charge of costumes. They were authentic and in many cases shiny, sparkling and altogether dazzling. Tommy the Cat’s costume was very cleverly designed and the rats, especially the Queen Rat, were first rate. The scene in the Sultan’s Palace was bright and colourful with an excellent backdrop. Makeup A special mention must go to Sophie Marshall and her team for the outstanding makeup of both the cat and the rats. I could not fault it so give yourselves a pat on the back. If we decide to do an animal makeup workshop for our groups in the future, I shall know where to come. The Chorus Never to be underestimated, the chorus are a very important factor in any production. The numbers they performed were lively with some good singing, although in the scene in the Sultan’s Palace it was difficult to more »

Just a reminder about the readings for our spring play “The Foreigner” which will be held this coming Sunday 22nd and Thursday 26th at 8pm in the Hall. The dates for the play are 27th and 28th April and 4th and 5th of May, with the dress rehearsal on Sunday 21st April. The play is a comedy written by Larry Shue. A basic outline of the play is as follows: “To forget his problems back in England, Charlie Barker takes a fishing lodge holiday in the Deep South of America. To avoid being pestered by the locals he pretends that he is a foreigner who speaks no English. This leads to him becoming involved, at first unwillingly, with the bizarre goings-on featuring a corrupt preacher, his pregnant girlfriend, her dim-witted brother and the local branch of the Ku Klux Klan.” There are 7 characters in the play, five men and two women. Three of the men and both women will need to have Southern American accents (Georgia) and two men will be English. All are welcome to attend the readings. If you have not been involved with the Lane End Players before, please contact our Membership Secretary Georgie Brooks (Georgina@FamilyBrooks.co.uk) for more information.
