Just a reminder about the readings for our spring play “The Foreigner” which will be held this coming Sunday 22nd and Thursday 26th at 8pm in the Hall. The dates for the play are 27th and 28th April and 4th and 5th of May, with the dress rehearsal on Sunday 21st April. The play is a comedy written by Larry Shue. A basic outline of the play is as follows: “To forget his problems back in England, Charlie Barker takes a fishing lodge holiday in the Deep South of America. To avoid being pestered by the locals he pretends that he is a foreigner who speaks no English. This leads to him becoming involved, at first unwillingly, with the bizarre goings-on featuring a corrupt preacher, his pregnant girlfriend, her dim-witted brother and the local branch of the Ku Klux Klan.” There are 7 characters in the play, five men and two women. Three of the men and both women will need to have Southern American accents (Georgia) and two men will be English. All are welcome to attend the readings. If you have not been involved with the Lane End Players before, please contact our Membership Secretary Georgie Brooks (Georgina@FamilyBrooks.co.uk) for more information.

A final word of thanks from Alan As a final word I would just like to thank each and every one of you for doing your bit to make OWALW a great show. The feedback I've been getting has been very positive. A few people have said they didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or applaud at times – and that was part of what I wanted to achieve (and yes I'm talking about audience members!). I hope you enjoyed taking part. I know it was hard work – rushed and trying at times ; but everyone pulled together and WE DID IT. I felt very proud of you all – well done. Best Wishes Alan x

It’s nearly panto time again – oh yes it is! It is Dick Whittington this year with Eve in the Producer’s chair. Readings for "Dick Whittington" will be held on Sunday 16th and Thursday 20th October, both in the Hall at 8pm. The set this time will require a fair bit of construction, so Eve would very much appreciate anyone who can help out at any of the sessions booked both for building and painting, even if you are not directly involved in the production. The dates booked for these are:- Saturday 29th October; Saturdays 5th; 12th; 19th; 26th November; Saturdays 10th; 17th December. Panto always requires lots of help from our members, so PLEASE come along if you can. Thank you!

Every production that the Players put on is full of unique challenges. Whether it’s figuring out a particularly complex piece of staging or managing a cast of 30, there’s always plenty to keep our members on their toes. Summer shows are particularly unique in that they are our only production based on non-professional content. Meaning, of course, that for better or worse, we write the shows ourselves. This year’s show had the added challenge of having an incredibly short rehearsal period because of the late Easter. In just four weeks, we went from zero to dress rehearsal for a show that in almost every regard is as complex as our pantomimes, and we get three months to rehearse those. Such a feat would not have been possible without a cast and crew who have been willing to put in so much extra effort over these few weeks. It was nearly inconceivable a month ago that we would end up with a show that has such fantastic lighting, music, singing and comedy, and that’s thanks to everyone involved working so hard and working so well together. As director, I would like to offer each and every person involved my heartfelt thanks for your efforts and I hope that now we’ve arrived, you enjoy the performances every bit as much as I’m sure our audiences will. Old Pishampton expects! And is proud. James

Oh What A Lovely War

…we are already working on plans to make this a production to remember… 'Oh What A Lovely War' is a theatrical chronicle of the horrors of the First World War told through the songs and documents of the period. It was first performed in 1963 by the Theatre Workshop under the direction of Joan Littlewood. It was acclaimed by audiences alike; it’s won awards; it’s been performed on Broadway as well as the West End; it’s been made into a film – and it’s been popular with amateur groups over many years – the Lane End Players performed the show in the 1970s. ‘Oh What A Lovely War' is moving and funny. It delivers a lyrical evocation of the tragedy and pathos of the First World War; one of the most futile and ferocious conflicts in history. Armed with sketches, songs and stories, a cast of Pierrot clowns (used by the original production because one of their taboos was ‘No khaki on stage’) to take you on an incredible journey across Europe. Along the way the story is marked by a fantastic collection of songs from the Great War – 'Pack Up Your Troubles', 'Keep The Home Fires Burning' and 'It's A Long Way To Tipperary'. 'Oh What A Lovely War' is a groundbreaking and stunning examination of a conflict that wiped out a whole generation of young men throughout Europe. I’m intending to direct the Players latest version of the show this autumn and together with Musical Director, Sarah Westcott, we are already working on plans to make this a production to remember. I will need quite a large cast but I promise you all it will be worth it. Please let me know as soon as you can that you want to be involved in any way. Any questions at all? Drop me an email – or pick up the phone – 01494 880038. Alan PS / Have a listen to some of the music from the show while you're here!
